Dogs help children to read
Beyond play and mutual learning, the connection between dogs and children establishes a unique bond that transcends. These companions not only share mischief and discoveries, but also build bridges of trust, empathy and security. From this connection, the R.E.A.D.® programme is born.
The R.E.A.D.® (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) programme is an initiative that employs specially trained dogs as reading companions for children. These dogs act as caring, non-judgmental listeners, providing a relaxed and supportive environment during reading sessions. This methodology aims to improve children’s reading and communication skills, as well as building confidence and self-esteem in a playful and motivating environment.
Dogs become silent companions in the pages of a book, a magical relationship is forged. Here, children not only find in their furry friends attentive readers, but also partners who help them overcome barriers, increasing their confidence and motivation to discover new stories.
Dogs not only listen to words, but also understand the heartbeat of the reader. And in return, children discover in these faithful companions an unconditional support that gives them the courage to face challenges.
At Picart Petcare, we are amazed to see how this special connection between dogs and children is not only a learning experience, but also a pure exchange of affection and growth. We are honoured to be part of this journey, celebrating the magic that happens when two different beings meet and transform each other.
We are talking about an ancient relationship between dogs and humans that has evolved, generating deeper forms of interaction. While dogs used to play specific roles, such as assisting in hunting or herding, their role now transcends this. Studies have shown that the relationship between dogs and people has a wide range of social, physical and emotional benefits.
In the modern era, innovative programmes have incorporated assistance dogs into environments such as hospitals and other institutions, providing support to people with various needs. One of these notable programmes is R.E.A.D.®, created in 1993 in the United States and expanding in countries such as Canada and Europe.
In Spain, the association Perros y Letras has been leading the R.E.A.D.® programme since 2012, implementing it in multiple locations. Its approach focuses on integrating assistance dogs into reading practice, fostering motivation to learn and raising children’s self-esteem.
This programme has demonstrated a number of tangible benefits:
- Blood pressure and heart rate reduction.
- Increased relaxation.
- Relief of perceived pain and limitations.
- Improvement in reading skills.
- Encouraging interest in reading.
- Increased self-esteem, self-confidence and self-acceptance.
