The Big Decision: adopting a dog

Adopting a dog is a life-changing decision for both the animal and you. It is important to consider what kind of needs the dog has and what kind of lifestyle you have. Once you have made your decision, it is time to understand that every dog has a unique history, and often these histories are marked by difficult experiences such as abandonment, abuse or long periods in shelters. It is therefore crucial to understand that, in the early days, your new friend may show distrust, shyness, fear or isolation. The most important things he needs are time, love and patience.

How to treat a dog in the first days of adoption?

Tips for the arrival

  1. Give him space and time: The first tip for handling a newly adopted dog is to let him explore his new home at his own pace. Allow him to sniff every nook and cranny without crowding him. Let him come to you when he feels ready. When he does, pet him gently on the head and let him sniff your hand first. Reward this contact with gentle, reassuring words to make him feel safe.
  1. Identify his safe place: See where in the house he feels most comfortable and move his bed to that place, whenever possible. If the chosen place is not suitable, choose a well-ventilated, clean and safe space for his bed. Leave some of your clothes on his bed so he can smell your scent and not feel lonely when you are not at home.
  1. Set a place for his food and water: Choose a regular place for his food and water bowl and establish feeding routines. Make sure he is quiet and undisturbed during meals. Keep clean, fresh water available at all times, with a water bowl near his feeder and another available at night.
  1. Proper nutrition: Opt for natural food appropriate to their age, special needs and physical condition. A proper diet is essential to maintain their health and wellbeing.
  1. Positive rewards: Picart kibble, toys, cuddles and positive rewards to reinforce good behaviour. Let him know when he does something right so he feels safe and happy in his new home.
  1. Family integration: Make him feel that he is an important member of the family. If he feels love, respect and protection, he will feel more at peace and will know that he is part of his new home, without fear of being rejected.
  1. Necessary accessories: Buy utensils for grooming and walking, such as a collar or harness that adapts to his body and needs.

Importance of Adoption

Adopting a dog not only gives a second chance to a living being in need, but also enriches your life with unconditional love and company. International Dog Adoption Day, 23 September, is a perfect day to think about the importance of adopting and giving a home to these animals who are waiting for a family.

Remember that the key to a successful transition is patience, love and dedication. In time, your new furry friend will adapt and fill your home with joy and gratitude.
