History

1953
Foundation

Pere Icart and his wife Teresa Clos founded the company Piensos Icart, which initially specialised in feed for farm animals, in Sant Pere de Vilamajor (Vallès Oriental).

1983
Second generation
Joan Icart Clos has officially joined the company, although he has been involved since childhood and is familiar with every aspect of the business. Joining him is Susanna Martori, who would later become his wife. Jordi Icart Clos would later follow in his older brother’s footsteps.
1993
New management
Joan Icart Clos is appointed managing director of the company, marking a turning point for Picart as he steered the company towards the production of granulated pet food. This decision was no accident: Joan Icart and Susanna Martori had already identified the potential for growth and specialisation in the pet food market whilst working on their final MBA project at ESADE.
2000
Picart PetCare is launched
The company’s new management identifies emerging needs in the pet food sector, and Picart begins manufacturing extruded food for dogs and cats – an innovative venture at the time that would go on to become the cornerstone and future of the business. The Picart Petcare division is established.
2006
Picart Select

Launch of the Picart Select range, featuring highly complete and balanced dog and cat food formulas made from high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

2009
NutriBest

Picart Petcare produces a premium-quality range for dogs and cats called NutriBest.

2009
Profesional range

Exclusive range introduced for professional breeders.

2013
Internationalisation

The company’s unstoppable international expansion begins with its first sales to Greece. The markets in Israel, Italy, Portugal and France are subsequently added, bringing today’s total to more than twenty countries. The Megabone and Select Cat ranges are also launched.

2014
Select Diet

The Select Diet range is introduced, formulated to meet specific health needs.

2018
New factory

The purchase of the land at Can Prat, in the Llinars del Vallès industrial estate, is finalised with a view to building the company’s new factory. The modern factory is just 8 kilometres from the current site and is also to be located within the Montseny Natural Park.

2020
Select Renewal

The company updates the Picart Select range in terms of formula and packaging. The Picart Select Mini range is also launched for small-breed dogs.

2022
Select Diet Renewal

Revamp of the Select Diet range and launch of Diet for cats.

2023
70 years

Celebration of the 70th anniversary, purchase of an innovative extrusion machine in the US, rebranding of the Megabone and NutriBest brands, and opening of the new manufacturing plant in Llinars del Vallès.

2024
Expansion

Picart launches its international expansion strategy in the Americas, starting with exploratory visits to Cuba, Ecuador and Chile. The company wins the Diplocat Award for Business Development.

At Picart, we always look to the future, guided by a philosophy of continuous improvement. In 2023, to mark our 70th anniversary, we opened our current state-of-the-art factory in Llinars del Vallès.

From Picart to the bowl

From the selection of the finest raw materials to the final packaging, Picart’s production process is governed by a series of meticulously planned steps, involving advanced technology and strict quality controls.

This is how our best bites make their way straight to your pet’s bowl:

Receiving
raw materials

All raw materials we receive undergo rigorous quality controls before being approved and incorporated into the production process, in line with the ongoing monitoring we carry out on all our suppliers.

Raw material dosing

Our dosing system is fully automatic, enabling us to work with a high degree of precision. Thanks to our advanced computer systems, we can guarantee that each formula is applied with precision.

Pre-mixing

The pre-measured raw materials are fed into a mixer to produce a uniform mixture, enabling us to work more efficiently in the subsequent stages.

Grinding

The mixture must then be ground in our mill to achieve a finer particle size. Once ground, the mixture is blended again to ensure the product is uniform, essential for guaranteeing that the final product contains all the components of the formula in the correct proportions. Our quality control system includes regular checks to ensure that the mixtures are consistent.

Extrusion

The resulting homogenous flour is now ready to be baked. In our preconditioner, we cook the mixture using steam and water to form a paste, which is then transferred to our extruder, where the product is finished off by being extruded and shaped into our familiar croquettes.

Drying and cooling

After cooking, we reduce the temperature and moisture content of the croquettes to ensure the optimal microbiological quality of our products throughout their shelf life. To achieve this, the croquettes undergo a drying and cooling process until they reach room temperature.

Packaging

At this stage, we must ensure that the product is in perfect condition for packaging. The Quality team takes various samples, which are analysed to ensure that the process has been carried out correctly.  making sure there’s nothing there but delicious croquettes. During the bag-filling stage, the product is passed through a metal detector and a dynamic checkweigher to ensure the correct weight of each of our product lines. It is then labelled with its batch number and expiry date to ensure proper traceability.

Palletising, storage and distribution

Once the bag has been filled, it is placed onto a pallet using our automatic palletiser and stored until it is ready for distribution. Each pallet is individually identified, enabling us to guarantee full traceability throughout the entire process, from raw material intake to the dispatch of the finished product.
